Career-Based Learning Experiences: Youth Apprentice & Employability Skills

Youth Apprenticeship (YA) Program

What is Youth Apprenticeship?

It’s a program from the Department of Workforce Development giving 11th and 12th graders the opportunity to:

Earn school credit—1 full elective credit each semester of work (2 credits for the year)
Work alongside a mentor in your chosen career pathway
Get PAID for your work
Walk away with an industry-recognized certification
Take technical-related courses that match your career interests
Be eligible for school-approved YA work release time throughout the year. You'll still need to meet OHS graduation requirements, but you might get 1-4 periods of release if it fits your schedule.

Employability Skills Work Experience Program

The Employability Skills program is open to 11th and 12th graders, offering them a chance to earn high school elective credit while working at a job they've secured during the school year. Throughout the semester, students need to work a total of 90 hours and complete additional homework (like online assignments in Google Classroom and coordinator meetings). After finishing the program, students can earn an Employability Skills Certificate from the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. This certificate showcases to potential employers that students possess 21st Century Employability skills. Successful completion of the program also earns students one credit per semester and may qualify them for work release during the school day.

Industry Recognized Credentials (IRCs)

At Oregon High School, students have access to various opportunities to earn industry certifications. These Industry Recognized Credentials involve taking a proficiency test to showcase their skill mastery at a professional level. These chances are available in numerous Career and Technical Education classes, empowering students to enhance their resumes and excel in job interviews. Classroom instructors will guide students on the process of taking these certification tests.

Career and Technical Student Organizations

A career and technical student organization (CTSO) is an extracurricular group that allows students in CTE pathways to enhance their knowledge and skills through participation in various activities, events, and competitions.

At Oregon High School, you have the opportunity to join organizations like FFA, SkillsUSA, FCCLA, HOSA, FBLA, and DECA. To learn more about any of these CTSOs, please contact the high school club adviser for the organization that interests you.

Early Post-secondary Opportunities — Dual Credit Courses

Dual credit courses give you the chance to earn college credit right here at Oregon High School, without needing to go to a college or university for the class. These classes are taught by OHS teachers who are certified to teach them and are designed to match the college curriculum. If you pass the class (using the college grading scale), you'll get that grade on a college transcript from the partnering institution. Plus, you'll also get a grade for the course on your high school transcript. It's a great way to get a head start on your college journey without leaving campus!

Next Steps

Discuss with your school counselor how this opportunity fits into your academic and post-high school plans.
Select a college course or two that pique your interest (please note that courses similar to those offered in the Oregon School District cannot be approved).
Submit your completed Early College Credit Program Application by March 1 (for Fall Semester) or October 1 (for Spring Semester). Return the form to Ms. D’Amelio by the specified due date.

What Happens Next?

After you submit your application, the Oregon School District will review it and notify you of their decision within 45 days of the deadline. Upon receiving an email indicating acceptance or denial, carefully review the information and follow any subsequent instructions.
If your application is approved, it will be forwarded to the college or university, and you will receive further guidance from them. Make sure to regularly check your email and adhere to all instructions provided by the college.
Inform your school counselor and School to Career Coordinator once you have been accepted into a course, so they can assist you with any necessary adjustments to your schedule.
Keep in mind that while the Oregon School District may approve your application, the college's decision may differ.

Start College Now (SCN)

At Start College Now (SCN), high school students have the opportunity to enroll in college courses at Wisconsin Technical Colleges. This option is open to 11th and 12th graders, providing you with an early introduction to college-level learning.

Courses requested must not duplicate or be comparable to those offered by the district.
Students can take up to 18 credits, with a maximum of 2 courses concurrently.
This opportunity is available for students in grades 11 and 12 only.
Students must fulfill the prerequisites specified for each course.

Only available for Fall and Spring semesters.

What is it?

We are providing this for all students so they can explore careers, learn about themselves, and be prepared for life after high school.

Work Permits

Anyone under the age of 16 is required to have a work permit before being allowed to work in any job (with the exception of agriculture or domestic service). Employers must have a work permit on file before work begins. Work permits can be obtained directly online from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

If you are 14- or 15-years-old, you need a work permit before you can work. But to get a work permit, you first need to receive a job offer.

Work with your parent/guardian

Your parent(s) or guardian must apply for a work permit for you, so be sure to talk to them about the job offer.

Apply for a permit

Have your parent(s) follow the instructions below to create a DWD ID. Then use the ID to log in and apply and pay for your work permit.

Receive an email

Work permits cost $10. Your parent(s) will receive an emailed confirmation after paying for your permit. Your new employer will reimburse you the $10 fee.

Start working

The emailed confirmation means that you can begin working even before we mail your permit to your employer. Congratulations on your new job!
